Detailed description of Fellows Creek Golf Course

Fellows Creek Golf Course, is a Public, 27 hole golf facility located in Canton, Michigan.

Fellows Creek Golf Club has three unique nine-hole layouts with each nine measuring more than 3,200 yards in length from the tips. The courses were co-designed by W. Bruce Matthews and Jerry Matthews. The three nine-hole courses (South, East, and West) can be combined to form three separate par-72 18-hole layouts. This adds to the variety of play.

The South Nine

The South Nine has a little more rolling terrain than the other nines and is also known for its elevation changes.

One of the outstanding holes on this nine is the par-5 No. 4, measuring 509 yards from the back tees and 440 from the forward tees. This is a fairly long hole with trees on the left side, a large bunker on the right front of the green, and trees in the back. You can use a driver on this hole, and if you're a long hitter, you'll be able to reach the green on your second shot. Watch out as well for the hills and mounds around the green.

The 5th hole is a short par-3 (147 yards from the back and 82 from the front tees) where you'll have an exciting downhill shot to the green. It's not a long shot, but it's still a challenging green to hit. There's a bunker on the right-hand side as well as a pond. If you're long, you could hit into a bunker behind the green. And the undulating green rises and falls, making for some lively putting.

Another par-3 on this nine, the final hole has been chosen by the Detroit Free Press as one of its Toughest 18 Holes in Southeast Michigan. It's long – 208 yards from the back and 171 from the front. What makes it exciting is that you're hitting your ball uphill to the green. Meanwhile, you're keeping your eye on the creek to the right that runs from tee to green. If you're short, you'll be hitting off a downhill lie, and on top of that, anything short will generally kick right into the water.

The East Nine

The East Nine, No. 3 par-5 looks like a tempting risk-reward opportunity, but it's a bit of a gamble. This hole, measurs 512 yards from the back and 438 from the front, has trees on the left-hand side for about 100 yards. To the right is a bunker that can trap your drive off the tee. A pond on the right of the two-tiered green as well as bunkers on both sides are possible threats on your approach.

No. 5 is another fun par-3, this one measuring 155 yards from the back and 96 yards from the front tees. Take a good look before you hit your ball at that pond on the right of the green that runs around the back. You'll be hitting from a 4-iron to a 9-iron off the tee, depending on how the wind is blowing on the day you play. The green has a lot of undulations besides. This hole looks easy, but many players come up short here.

Another great par-3, the 7th hole, will test your length. It measures 223 yards from the back and 150 from the front. On the right, trees threaten and halfway to the undulating green there is a pond on the right and bunkers right and left. You have to hit a very straight ball here. Anything that you hit to the right goes in the water. Also watch out for placement on the green which is longer than it is wider.

The West Nine

The West Nine, one of the popular holes is the 2nd, a short, reachable par-4, playing at 298 yards from the back and 223 from the front. You can drive this hole, but you're hitting through a fairway lined with trees. The other obstacle is crossing a creek that's about 60 yards short of the green. There are also two bunkers on the left just before the green. If you get in the first one, you'll have to carry the second in order to reach the green. There's a lot of roll on this green.

No. 6 is a par-5 (511 from the back tees and 415 from the front). There are dense trees here on both sides, so hit a very straight shot off the tea. There is mounding on the right side as well as two bunkers. On the green, you'll find mounding and bunkering as well. If you go over the green, you'll end up in high grass and trees. Even so, you can reach the green in two if you play this hole well. But most golfers need three shots and hit a fairway wood off the tee to avoid trouble.

No. 7 is an interesting par-3 that's one of the newest holes at our club. It was recently rebuilt as part of some recent changes. It measures 198 yards from the back and 120 from the front. You'll be hitting off the tee to a two-tiered small green with bunkers on both sides. Although there is a landing area in the front, high heather does protect the front of the green as well. The key to making par here is where the pin is placed.

Distances from the tee boxes on each of the holes is as follows:

South – 3,222 yards, 3,078, 2,668.

East – 3,229 yards, 3,002, 2,610.

West – 3,340 yards, 3,018, 2556.

$21 (cart included), played on Monday, November 2022 at 8:10 AM

Got the 2nd tee time ($25 w/cart) this Monday at 8:10am and in 2hrs and 50 minutes I was loading the clubs back into my car. They had the South 1st (3,197yds) and East 2nd (3,241yds) as the 18 hole loop today, with both playing at Par 36 each. With plenty of scattered trees bordering the rolling and slightly curved fairways, finding short created a little challenge. Leaves were removed from fairways and playable rough that added to the pace of play. The greens were rolling smooth and fast (9-10) despite players not fixing their ball marks as the greens were soft and holding. Sand traps were a little firm but edged very nicely and still had the rakes available. (some courses have removed them already) It seemed that almost all of the greens here were elevated and protected by sand trap or steep front/sides to reject missed shots. The Front 9 (South) starts out with Back to Back Par 4's at 400yds and two (2) Par 5's on #3 (479yds) and #4 (509yds). These holes are both narrow with bordering trees and tough greens. The #7 Par 4 at 349yds protects its Hcp2 by elevating the green, LH/RH sand traps and a creek crossing in front of the green. Having the #9 Par 3 at 183yds as the Hcp 1 hole has this 2 club elevated green with missing left for a kick on, better than right and down the hill. The Back 9 (East) is more open with #3 a Par 5 at 512yds that has two (2) front traps and water right guarding this Hcp 4 elevated green so play three (3) shots for a easy Par. The #7 Par 3 at 223yds with water on the RH side and three (3) traps in the front is their Hcp 1 hole. (Sand is not bad here) Finishing on #9 a 442yd dogleg is a tight uphill Par 4 on this Hcp 2 hole is tough. Great conditions here today but found a few trees that took away from easy pars, such is the endless pursuit of a totally satisfying round of golf. Ended up shooting 40/43 w/33putts and will be working again on position vs. distance next time.

Have played this course many times, all 3 nines. Like the par 3 5th on the South, bunker on one side, water on the other. Played for a fund raiser in the snow at the end of January. Had a great time. The staff at the course were great! Will be back in both the summer and winter!!
